Ultrasonic scalers are used to remove tartar and plaque build-up from teeth surfaces above the gum-line. Followed by polishing the teeth with a fluoride infused prophylactic paste. 

In this procedure, local anesthesia is required to assure optimal patient comfort. The ultrasonic scalers are use to remove calculus (tartar) in areas above as well as below the gum line where a patient has deeper periodontal pockets & loss of supporting bone around the teeth. 

The objective is to remove foreign objects and allow the bone and gingival tissue to heal which leads to reduction in periodontal pocket depths and healthier oral cavity. 

This procedure usually follows the initial Scaling & Root Planing treatment in intervals of 3-6 months which is determined by the overall oral health of patient's oral cavity and the level of improvement in gum health over time.
